Cosmic Spherules found in Diamond Exploration Samples

cosmic_imageCosmic spherules are milimeter to microscopic extraterrestrial particles that fall to the Earth at a rate of one 0.1mm particle per square metre per year. Although every rooftop has them, they are difficult to locate due to dilution with terrestrial material.

 

 

Diamond exploration sample concentrates examined at Diatech have provided a new, ongoing and novel way to recover these cosmic spherules ("micrometeorites"). The spherules occur as a by-product in the heavy mineral concentrates being examined for kimberlitic indicator minerals.
